Let's learn how to make pedals and choose tools!

Introducing the circuit information necessary to make your own effect pedal, how to obtain the circuit board, and tools such as soldering iron. You can also see how to make your own effect pedal using surface mount parts.

Introducing self-made effectors by circuit board type

Universal board / purchased PCB

This section includes pedals hand-wired with a universal board and pedals made using printed boards purchased at online stores. Some have been remade with surface mount (SMD) printed boards.

KLON KENTAUR: Overdrive

It is an overdrive that pushes the guitar output to the amplifier by creating a voltage of 27V from a 9V battery and expanding the dynamic range using a charge pump IC.

VEMURAMU JAN RAY: Overdrive

It is a clone/MOD of the overdrive pedal "Timmy", which is characterized by low gain distortion.

Xotic BB Preamp: Distortion

This distortion is widely used because it has controls that are easy to use at the performance site.

MXR Envelop Filter: Auto Wah

A classic auto wah that responds quickly to picking. I also make modifications such as sweep UP / DOWN switching.

Through hole (THD) PCB design / manufacturing

These are pedals designed by myself using KiCad and made with PCB manufactured at a factory in China. Through-hole parts commonly used in electronic work are used.

Noiseless delay: using PT2399 + V571

[NEW!] I made a noiseless delay pedal using the handy delay IC "PT2399". In order to create an analog delay-like sound, the band is limited to 3 kHz or less, and the compander "V571" is used to reduce the delay noise.

Full analog 600ms delay pedal with 2 BBDs

[NEW!] I used two BBDs to create a pedal that provides a delay time of 600ms based on the BOSS DM-3 which provides a delay time of up to 300ms with single BBD chip.

BOSS DM-3 MOD: 300ms Analog delay

This is a dedal with full analog delay effect using BBD. I modified the circuit diagram of DM-3 and used BBD "V3205" from Cooladuio.

BOSS CE-3 MOD: Analog chorus

This is a dedal with full analog chorus effect using BBD. I modified the circuit diagram of CE-3 and used BBD "V3207" from Cooladuio.

BOSS OC-3 MOD: Analog octaver

This is an octaver pedal using CMOS flip-flops. I modified the circuit of BOSS OC-2 and replaced CMOS with another IC.

YAMAHA CH-01 Repair and Regeneration: Chorus

[Extra article] I repaired the YAMAHA Chorus CH-01, which I bought when I was a student more than 30 years ago, and put it back in a new enclosure.

Surface mount (SMD) PCB design / manufacturing

These are pedals designed by myself using KiCad and made with PCB manufactured at a factory in China. Surface mount (chip) parts are mounted by hand soldering using tweezers.

Suhr Riot clone : Hi-gain distortion

I made my own high gain distortion pedal, Suhr Riot, using a mini size enclosure.

Original design: Noise gate

I designed the noise gate for the guitar myself. I built a circuit using a breadboard and decided the constant while watching the operation with an oscilloscope.

EP BOOSTER & MICRO AMP 2-in-1

The classic MXR MICRO AMP, which is made up of one operational amplifier, and the recently popular Xotic EP BOOSTER are packed into the same pedal.

Keeley 4 Knobs: Compressor

It is a clone of ROSS type compressor with a wide range of sound creation with 4 knobs.

Keeley Direct Mix MOD: Compressor

Based on the circuit of Keeley 4 Knob, it has been modified so that the direct sound can be blended.

MXR Phase 90 MOD: Classic Phaser

I modified MXR Phase 90, one of the classic pedals, and added resonance SW and speed LED.

VEMURAMU JAN RAY: Overdrive

An overdrive pedal with a characteristic low gain distortion. I made it a mini size with surface mount components.

Xotic BB Preamp: Distortion

A creamy and fine distortion pedal. I made it a mini size with surface mount parts.

BOSS DM-3 MOD: 520ms Analog delay

It is a full analog delay using two BBDs. The circuit diagram of DM-3 has been modified to extend the delay time. Sound quality has also been improved.

ISP Decimator MOD: Noise reduction

Modified "ISP Decimator", the king of noise reduction pedals. Designed using V2164 from Coolaudio, a VCA available in Japan.

CabinetSim: Analog cabinet simulator

Marshall cabinet simulator consisting of analog circuits with 4 adjustment pots. I use it in my home record.

MAD PROFESSOR AUTO WAH MOD

Faithfully designed Auto Wah. I compared with my own MXR Envelop Filter

MIDI/WiFi pedal controller using Arduino

Below are my articles on how to control analog effect pedals using Arduino.

Presettable BB-Preamp distortion pedal using Arduino

[Latest!] I made my own distortion pedal with a preset function. It controls four variable resistors of "BB-Preamp" that creates creamy distortion. MIDI control is possible.

Presettable Analog Delay using Arduino

[NEW!] I made a self-made analog delay that can control the variable resistance of the three knobs in the self-made analog delay with a microcomputer and preset the settings of the knobs.

WiFi control of effect pedals with Arduino and ESP32C3

I used Arduino to control my own analog effect pedal from my iPhone or PC using Seeed XIAO ESP32C3.

MIDI control of effect pedals with Arduino

In order to make my own effect pedal that can switch presets and parameters by receiving MIDI signals, I used Arduino to check the realization.
